In the school courtyard,
The bell rings as always.
Inside the classroom,
There is talk of knowledge,
Yet sometimes,
A lesson on self-interest
Looms larger than the textbook itself.
Children are taught...
“Speak the truth,
Stand for justice,
Become good human beings.”
But the world outside
Whispers quietly into their ears...
“Look after your own interests first;
Truth can change
According to circumstances.”
In the temple of education...
New buildings are added,
New schemes are introduced,
New slogans are written.
Yet the question remains...
Has education truly succeeded
In making our children
better human beings?
Sometimes education
Becomes an election speech,
Sometimes a dream in a manifesto,
Sometimes a collection of achievement statistics,
And sometimes
A means of distributing jobsto win votes.
Where we should be
Searching for the future
in the eyes of children,
Sometimes we find ourselves
Searching instead
For the interests of our present.
Modern education says...
Teach them to think,
Let them ask questions,
Let them create,
Let them choose their own path.
But our self-interest
Sometimes becomes afraid...
Because a child
Who has learned to question
Cannot easily be directed.
And so,
Let modern education
Be nothing more than a certificate,
Nothing more than a ladder to employment,
Nothing more than a subject for speeches.
I would never say
That education should give birth to...
Citizens with conscience,
People who can see with open eyes,
Listen with open hearts,
And refuse to remain silent when they encounter injustice.
But the day
We turn all of this upside down...
Education will step out
Through the windows of the classroom
And place a bright question
in every corner of society...
“What kind of society are we building?”
And perhaps,
In searching for the answer
To that very question,
One day our self-interest, too, will mature,
...
𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝,
...
And the future of our children
Will no longer belong
To anyone’s self-interest
But will become
The shared dream
Of the entire society.
