How “Reading Corner” supports learning of early learners in school?
An Innovative school always tries to create the situations where a child automatically feels the enticement of learning. One of these situations is establishment of “Reading Corner” in school. The “Reading Corner” provides the situations for a child to touch, see and play with print-rich media. We have seen children enjoying pictures in the books, trying to make stories looking at pictures (exercise of imaginations), playing with friends saying – “This big car is mine and this small one is yours”, “This man with suit is my father and this man with tattered clothes is your father”, “I eat this big apple”, “This beautiful rose is mine”, “You take this ‘two’ guavas, I will take ‘five’ guavas, etc. We have seen children talking with pictures. These are the situations where a child feels books are interesting. These are the situations where a child learns many things without knowing s/he is learning.
What are the basic requirements for establishment of “Reading Corner”?
Size of spaces for establishment “Reading Corner” depends upon its availability in school. Actually it doesn’t require a big or spacious room. We can start “Reading Corner” for early learners in varandah also putting a low-height table or a bench to keeps books. It is better if it is near staff room so that every teacher can keep an eye at the corner. If available, put a carpet on floor so that children can sit and enjoy the books (a child need not take the book in her classroom).
Preparation:
If it is decided by your school head then need not worry; but if it is decided by you as a teacher, then tell your head about it and convince her about the significance of it in enhancing child’s learning. Ask her to direct/request your fellow teachers to support you. Convince your fellow teachers that this provides scope for children to use/practice the knowledge what they have learnt in their formal classes.
When children be there in “Reading Corner”?
Children will be there in “Reading Corner” during recess, off period if HM or a teacher let them be there.
Where are the books?
Our State has provided a set of books to schools having colourful picture illustrations for English and Mathematics before last years. Some books are already there in the school cupboards.
Most importantly, where there is a will, there is a way!
